Wellington 7
Chipping Sodbury Town 2

17th November 2018

Wellington’s 7-2 victory over Chipping Sodbury Town on Saturday 17 November sounds convincing and should help the team to recover from two disappointing defeats last week in both the Les Phillips Cup and in the league. But it wasn’t until the final 30 minutes that Wellington really took a firm grip on the match and overcame a stubborn, resolute opposition.
Given that Chipping Sodbury were lying near the foot of the Toolstation Premier League before the match, the odds should have been in the home side’s favour but following the defeat by Hengrove Athletic last week – a match the Tangerines might have been expected to win – the issue of confidence was a factor in this match.

Wellington opened the scoring after 7 minutes when Jack Bryant scored from the spot but they were ahead for only a minute. Chipping Sodbury caught the defence off guard and Liam Pullen equalised.
A superb strike by Joe Chamberlaine reopened the lead and, until the 60th minute, the match was equally balanced between two sides who matched one another in tenacity, vigour and wastefulness. Shots at both ends missed the target and passes were either too ambitious or lacking accuracy. However, the work rate of both sides was remarkable as the game became an end-to-end affair.

Sam Jones’ header on 60 minutes put the home side further ahead and perhaps broke Chipping Sodbury’s will as three further goals in quick succession – two from Conor Bryant and one from his brother Jack – put the game beyond the visitors’ reach. With the game won, the Tangerines could sit back, allowing Sam Jenkins to pull back a second for Chipping Sodbury before the ever-competitive Glen Wright added a further goal in injury time.

Wellington are now in 10th place in the league and travel to Bridport on Wednesday 21st November with their spirits and confidence as a team revived. Bridport are in 17th position but have played four fewer matches than the Tangerines.
