Chipping Sodbury Town FC looking for an 'Exciting Season'
CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB manager has said he is expecting a 'big season' ahead for his team.
Speaking following his side's loss to rivals Yate Town FC on Wednesday, Neil admitted there were positives to take despite the 1-3 defeat.
"Getting that match sharpness back was the key thing from that night, trying to find patterns of play that we are working towards," he said.
"Match fitness is obviously the key thing. We were looking to try and gel the squad. When I looked at it (pre-season) I wanted to make sure that I got the team in good shape before the season.
"We had a couple of new faces which performed well last night, so we are probably going to be looking to add some to the team for this year."
Neil's side held their own against Yate Town right up until the 88th minute, when Town captain Nick Peare scored two brilliant free-kicks to give the visitors the win.
Ross Langworthy had put Yate ahead in the first half, finishing with a fine header into the bottom corner. However George Box had levelled things for Sodbury with a fine finish after the ball rebounded to him in the box.
Peare had the last word though beating Sodbury's keeper Kieren Provis, who had made a superb save onto the crossbar earlier in the half, with two fantastically taken free-kicks.
"We played really well, we were undone by two brilliant set-plays so when you look at it that way then we have to take the positives from the game," Neil continued.
"We had our chances and on a different day could have ended up with a win. I wish them luck for the upcoming season, I'm sure they will be successful."
Neil took over the side last season after previous manager Gary Powell left for Paulton Rovers in June, he is now hoping to continue to build an 'exciting, young' team.
"I wanted to build a youthful, enthusiastic squad that want to develop. We don't have the budget that other teams around us have, so we have to find a different angle and way of doing things." He said.
"We have now got a squad which is looking really promising and are really committed. In return we really look at trying to push players up the leagues and to the next levels.
"We have had players that have been approached by other clubs, so the fact that we have been able to keep those players here is testament to everyone at the club."
Rockleaze Rangers are the visitors in Sodbury's final game of pre-season on Saturday, July 28, with Neil hoping his side can use that to drive them to success in the league that starts the following weekend."It is going to be nice to end the pre-season at home, they are going to be a strong well-drilled side. So it is one that we are looking forward to playing."
