WICKWAR WANDERERS U18 6 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN U18 3 In this second local derby within weeks between Wickwar Wanderers and Chipping Sodbury, Wickwar came away again with the bragging rights and the Division 2 Championship that relegated Sodbury to runners up spot. For the first quarter of the game Chipping Sodbury appeared to heading for revenge for their loss from their first meeting as Adam Perks opened the scoring when he lobbed keeper followed by a second goal as Ben Ashpole scrambled the ball into the net. With 10 minutes to go for the interval the fortunes of Wickwar changed as they pulled a goal back when Sodbury failed to clear the ball from their goal area and allowed Matt Sands to slot the ball home from close quarters. Before half time Wickwar scored a further 2 goals to give them a 3 – 2 advantage at half time that left Sodbury wondering what had happened. Following the break Wickwar were the stronger team but their dominance failed to pay dividends as they were unable to score for some 30 minutes. At this point of time Sodbury must have thought they had weathered the storm and were in with a chance of at least getting a draw from the game that would mean Wickwar would need to win their last game of the season to win the Division. However 75 minutes into the half Wickwar scored another goal that would be the start of a crazy 6 or 7 minutes period when 4 goals would be scored. The first 2 went to Wickwar followed by a Simon Griffith goal with a shot from the edge of the penalty area and 1 minute later Wickwar were to score their 6th goal following a cross from the right. With less than 10 minutes to go there was no way that Sodbury could find a way back and Wickwar Wanderers ran out comfortable 6 – 3 winners. The goal scorers for Wickwar were Robert Haines, Jack Beal and Matthew Sands one goal each and a hat trick for Edward Hawkins. Report - Sandra King |
