Gloucestershire Midweek Floodlit League – U18s
Chipping Sodbury Town U18s 6
Cheltenham Town U18s 5
Star Player Josh Pandolfino
Chipping Sodbury U18s made their home debut in the Gloucestershire Midweek Floodlit League and secured all three points with a narrow win over Cheltenham Town.
The home side opened their account after just three minutes when they were awarded a penalty for handball and Josh Padolfino netted confidently sending the keeper the wrong way. Josh had a hand in Sodbury’s second just four minutes later when his cross was deflected in for an own goal.
The Sods dominated the opening phase of the match creating several clear chances however it was the visitors who scored next following a goal mouth scramble which Sodbury failed to clear.
Matt James increased the Sodbury lead on twenty minutes however Cheltenham reduced the deficit just a minute later.
Sodbury found their visitors difficult to close down and were hit on the break a number of times during a first half in which the score line changed frequently. Just as the hosts appeared to gain the upper hand back came the visitors and the half ended 5-3 with a second goal for Matt Janes and a long range chip from Keane Ashwood completing Sodbury’s first half haul.
The attending crowd were certainly enjoying the entertainment however the second half was a more subdued affair as both teams tired and made substitutions. Josh Pandolfino scored his second spot kick of the game after ten minutes of the restart when the referee’s assistant spotted a deliberate handball.
Cheltenham again struck back just two minutes later after a Sodbury attack broke down to close the score to 6-4. Both teams battled for superiority and came close to another goal but as the game progressed the home side showed more determination and began to manage the game more effectively.
The visitors were awarded their own penalty with just ten minutes left and completed the scoring for the evening despite the best efforts of Joe Stott in the home goal who managed to get a glove on a well taken spot kick.
Sodbury coach Damian Froidsham commented after his sides 6-5 victory,
"The boys were terrific from start to finish. Cheltenham Town are highly organised and carry a real attacking threat but we swarmed all over them and I am delighted with the application we showed on a great night for our team."
